New Jersey counties to conduct wireless network feasibility study

The southern New Jersey counties of Gloucester and Camden said they will join together to conduct a feasibility study to see if a wireless network will be beneficial to their residents. The study is expected to cost $250,000, and officials from both regions say they will split the cost equally in order to have it done.

Being a lifelong New Jersey resident, I'm a bit perturbed that cities throughout the state have not jumped on the muni WiFi bandwagon. Sure, a few towns here and there have looked at getting into the game, but for the most part, this state has been extremely quiet when it comes to citywide wireless. My theory has been that cable companies like Comcast, Time-Warner, and CableVision have such a stranglehold on the broadband marketplace in this state that other entities like an EarthLink or other muni WiFi service providers are probably finding it difficult to have conversations with local officials about working on a wireless networking project.

In any event, it'll be interesting to see what comes out of the feasibility study and whether the two aforementioned counties will take the plunge into the muni WiFi wireless pool.
